I almost didn't get this pump as they don't seem to make em but thanks to a determined parts counter guy they evidently made one more or found it it is a direct bolt in replacement pump for the 78-79 truck with the Aluminum pump with plastic tank

and because of the shaft it is not a run of the mill pump it was special built the shaft is long to compensate for the adapter bracket to fit it in the ford bracket
also the bracket I used in the picture has no bearing in how the pump fits as ford used the same pump from 1978 to current

I think Trent's right. I went to 2 different napa stores and only one of them could find it and when it arrived the box looked like it had been thrown out of a plane 10 years ago. The guy who found it said it was in a parts storage warehouse somewhere in the midwest and although the computer says they still make it he wasn't sure if they actually do. BUT... it is a fantastic pump. I'd gone through a standard saginaw, the standard ford pump and the heavy duty ford pump from AGR and there aint no goin' back. Out of courtesy for my fellow man, I won't rush down and try to buy another, but is it possible to rebuild one of them?

Ok Parts America showed online last night that they could ship it in 1 day so I jumped on it. By the time order was finsihed it had a ship date of the 20th. Get an email this mourning that my order has been canceled because they are unable to locate one.

Ok, before I try to locate one of these babies. Is it even going to fit my '78 351M/400 with the A/C bracket that sits above the p/s pump? It appears the filler neck is angled back, but will it still clear the York A/C pump?

Ok got a reply from Cardone seems they are completely out of stock in their warehouse too. Did offer the R&R program to me from any one of their retailers except Advance Auot Parts and Autozone.

Guess I should have read this post a bit closer. I spent a few hours in the salvage yard today looking at every older model ford car searching for this unique pump to no avail. Then I reread the replies to it only to discover that it was a special built replacement for the stock pump. No wonder I didn't have any luck finding one on a car. Monday I'll check out the truck section.
On another note, I did find some really cool injector plugs for my project. Take a look at the connectors for the late model 4 cylinder engine in the Focus or maybe the Taurus, they have locking clips for positive retention to the injector. A very good idea, and I couldn't pass them up for $1 for the full set of them.

Hey let me know when you get yours. When mine came I thought they had sent me a used core at first. It was in an old box with power steering fluid stains all over it. When I opened it I found a rebuilt pump sealed in a plastic bag.

I did not find anything out of the ordinary:
It's nice to finally have decent power steering. This is a great pump, quiet as a church mouse. And if it's anything like the Sag on my pickup, I won't have to touch it for many years.

Just got a call and mine will be here sometime this week! I ordered it about 3 weeks ago! Infact I think I am going to buy 2! I was told these are custom made. It is just getting them to do it. The sales rep said he may make it a stockable item here in GF Montana if he can sell a couple more! So all you MT boys buck up! LOL Robert

That is why I asked, because I have not had much luck dealing with stuff that is out of the ordinary. So I end up finding stuff on the internet and taking care of it myself instead.
Glad to know you have good help up there.

and I thought putting the Number in the topic was a good idea for anybody who wanted the number it would be in plain view and no scrolling to find it
the Part # is 20-6244
the price is/was about $100.00 - $130.00 plus your plastic/aluminum pump for core
posted
sorry about that. you're right, it was a good idea, it's just that not enough people do it, so you know, it was overlooked in my eagerness to read the thread.

I have the regular old pump on mine. works fine. is it worth it to find the 20-6244 and junk the one I have now? Will I notice a diffence in steering or is it simply a better built unit that will live longer?

if your pump is giving you good results then don't mess with it
typical ford pump does works ok but usually whines about it and the steering isn't quite as nice as it should be but is acceptable Ford used the Sag pump on their Vans and high end luxury cars for a good reason because their pump didn't cut it
personally I would/am convert to the sag pump and this one makes the conversion really simple and easy that is why I feel the conversion worth the effort if it required fabrication of custom mounts/hoses and what not then I would prolly just use the plastic/aluminum pump as it did produce satisfactory results for me

Got one of these thru NAPA a few days ago and learned a few things - Although this is still a good Cardone (remanufacturer) #, Cardone has no more cores at the present time. If any more cores come in un-spoken for, Cardone will rebuild and warehouse, otherwise only ones left are in parts warehouses (NAPA, Autozone, etc) so anyone wanting one would be wise to go ahead and try to get it. I think NAPA had less than 20 left in all their warehouses combined.

Cardone rebuilds thses pumps however it is a custom built pump no direct cores
the shaft is custom made the horse shoe on the front is custom made the hose fitting adapter is custom made all the rest could be used from a core Sag pump I highly doubt they are running low on Sag pumps
they just don't want to make more of these pumps unless the demand goes up

I'm probably taking a big risk of hexing myself now, but I am supposed to go pickup my new pump from NAPA in a couple hours. I ordered the only one in the pacific northwest and it's on it way to the local store, supposedly as we speak. Can hardly wait, guess what I'll be doing this weekend? Oh, what is the preferred fluid to run in this pump? I will probably try to find a synthetic, but failing that, just a good quality power steering fluid with fluid protectant in it.

WoooHoooo, no hexes here. I am now the proud owner of a 20-6244 and will be installing it tomorrow assuming it doesn't snow again. What type of puller is required to remove the pulley from the stock pump? I don't have my manual handy or I'd look it up myself.

Is it really worth the swap or I should ask in my case my Bronco will be driven but not all that much and may even be taken on a few road trips.
Is there any advatages for me to swap to the sag pump?
I keep for getting to check with the local stores to see if they can even get the pump.

Quad - most auto parts stores here will loan the tool for a refundable deposit - it is specific for removing pwr str pump pulley - collar attaches to snout on pulley and and pulls it off by pushing against shaft. RTM - can't help there, haven't installed mine yet.

I have yet to buy a pump at all and the bronco is no where near running as it is in the middle of the resto process.
We buy parts from Advance daily and get a pretty good price break so I may be able to get the pump for a few penny's less.
I also think I have the same bracket as INFOFORD. I have the serp set up for a 460.
InfoFord mentioned something about the shaft length being special. Do all the shaft lengths come as needed or is this a secondary thing that needs to be done? I am guessing the pump can be used as is just from what I have read here in the posts.

the shaft in this pump is special it was built to be a direct bolt in replacement of the ford plastic aluminum pump it works with no mods for this purpose it will not work for a standard sag pump replacement like in GM or lincoln or ford vans
it will directly replace the plastic aluminum pump

I hope thay can get the pump for me. The price was $62 or close to that and of course I will get the shop discount on top of that, if they can get me a pump.

I just ordered two pumps for $63 each and that includes the $5 core charge. They should be here on Friday. If I had the cash I would have ordered all 5 of them but no need to be greedy as I may never need more than one in the life time of owning the bronco.

List price was something like $190. Not sure what walk in cost was but the shop cost was $57 plus the $5 core.
I am sure the pump could be shipped for $10 or $15 bucks so if anyone wanted me to pick them one up just let me know. that would put the cost of the pump around $70 to $75.

Quad, only one in the northwest? I have ordered 2 of these pumps from car quest in the past 6 months and only had to wait 1 day for my local shop in stanwood to get the part in from tacoma. Even when I was in virginia I had absolutely no problem finding these pumps from carquest. And once you have the "special bracket" If you ever need to get a new pump you can purchase any basic saginaw pump. Remove the bracket and the hose adapter from your pump and install them on the new pump.

The shaft on a standard Saginaw pump is not long enough to work with the adaptor bracket.

I took a extra pully and cut the center out. Then pressed it on a old shaft that I removed. Then pressed the pully on the shaft with it and welded them together, pulled them back off and cut it to length and then pressed it on a stock sag pump.Works fine.
